WP1 - Impacts des inondations et étiages futurs

IMPACTS of future FLOODS and LOW-FLOWS: a technical and scientific analysis of climate-change-induced floods and low-flows: prospective modelling, efficiency of water management measures, damage calculation, and proposition of solutions.

The main objective is to propose, by the end of 2012, a WATER MANAGEMENT STRATEGY for the ADAPTATION of the Meuse basin to climate change and its hydrological impacts: floods & low-flows.

To be used by water managers and policy-makers, this strategy will be built on a scientific investigation of climate trends and of the direct & indirect effects of the evolution of the hydrology on the Meuse basin. The proposed strategy will consist in a series of actions to be implemented in water management as well as recommendations for sustainable land-use.

Several studies confirm potential clashes between water supply, flood control, hydropower & minimum streamflow (required for ecological & water quality purposes) under changing climatic & hydrological conditions. AMICE's wide partnership has been set up to generate win-win solutions and avoid negative side-effects.

Existing management practices need to be revised and amended where appropriate, to adapt and respond to climate evolutions.

The second objective is to check whether present water management techniques applied on the Meuse basin will be able to cope with climate change and still be efficient in the coming decades: the “CLIMATE-CHECK”. Of particular relevance is the vulnerability to climate change of costly water infrastructures (ex. dykes & dams), which have an operational lifespan of several decades, but were designed on the assumption of fixed climatic conditions. This evaluation will influence the strategic orientations of the countries on preparedness, prevention and protection measures, but also in other domains than water management: land use, transport, energy, ...

The last objective of WP1 is to communicate on this strategy of adaptation. Books, scientific publications, technical reports and summary reports will be set-up to explain, share and DISSEMINATE OUR RESULTS. Non-technical summaries of the main findings will be provided in the 4 languages of NWE.
